What ego?

You probably know about my favourite man in this world by now. And also how he loves narrating fables and lines of wisdom, and how much I love to just sit by him and listen.

I was at his place yesterday, and out of the many little narrations he made, one line he spoke was priceless. He was reciting the lines of a poet he reveres, when he said, “Always remind yourself of death; that you are going to die someday. That will keep your ego out of you.”

Always remind yourself of death. That you are going to die someday.
That nothing you have or will ever possess will accompany you through death.
Only you will die. The world will still move on.
A few good people will cry and mourn. A few evil others may be relieved.
But the mourning and the relief will last only for a few seasons and only among a few people,
and the world will eventually move on.
Nothing you can ever have or do makes you immortal. Nothing you ever earn or steal is yours to take.
No one owes you anything. And nothing really matters.

Always remind yourself of death. That you are going to die someday.
You don’t know when. And all you have is this beautiful moment.
And a few more moments like these.
